Gingerbread Houses

Last week we read lots of Gingerbread books. We read the Gingerbread Man, the Gingerbread Boy, The Stinky Cheese Man, Gingerbread Fred, and finally the Gingerbread Baby. There is a gingerbread house at the end of the Gingerbread Baby so on Friday we did that for our Fun Friday activity. We made two; one for the boys and one for the girls.

First are the pictures of the girls house. They were very eager and theirs kind of fell apart.

And now here is the boys house. They may be the next Aces of Cakes!

And now the best part, EATING IT!

Sock Hop

Our student council hosted a sock hop on Friday. Each child who brought a pair of new adult socks was admitted. The socks were collected for the elderly at a local nursing home. We were excited to help with the service project as well as get to do the Cha-Cha Song with some of our teachers!

Christmas Ornaments

We have been carefully making Christmas ornaments for our class Christmas tree. Here are two of the ones we have made from beads and pipe cleaners. The top one is obviously a candy cane and the second one is a Christmas tree.

November Home Project

Several months out of the year we have a home project that is fun. For the month of November we had a turkey to decorate. We are allowed to use any decoration that we can think of! This year we had feathers, pasta, rice, beans, magazine cutouts, and crayons. Check them out:

Six Sticks

A couple of weeks ago we worked on ways to make six. We read a book called Six Sticks. Afterward we use six Q-Tips to make our own pictures. Here are a few of our pictures.

Native American Lunch

Today we all dressed as Native Americans for lunch. Yesterday we dressed as Pilgrims. We have learned a lot about the Pilgrims and Native Americans the last couple of weeks. Here are some of the things we have learned:

Omar: "Some Native Americans lived in teepees."
Skyler: "Native Americans lived in different houses and they didn't paint them."
Brooklyn: "The Pilgrims came over on the Mayflower."
Sarah: "The Pilgrims helped start Thanksgiving."
Quincy: "Native Americans sometimes lived in teepees so they could move around."
Even though we looked at all kinds of stuff about longhouses, wigwams, and chickees, somehow the famous teepee is what always sticks in their mind!

Easter Egg Hunt

Today Fun Friday was a big Easter Egg Hunt! All the teachers brought plastic eggs and had some kind of treat to put in them. The resource teachers put the treats in the eggs and then each child's name on three eggs. We were divided into groups of three classes on different parts of our campus and hunted the eggs. Each group also had a chocolate bunny to find! We had a great time!
Anxiously waiting to start hunting eggs!
Eggs everywhere!
Searching for the eggs with our names...

We were so glad for a pretty day to get to do this!

Here we are with our eggs!

Spring is in the air!

Well we finally got the virus out of our system, thank goodness! I started to make pictures last week and wouldn't you know that the batteries in my camera died? Ugh! Here is a little bit of what we've been up to in room 111.

Friday in art we made buttercups out of paper plates and souffle cups. What fun!
Today we made Easter bunnies and that was really fun too!

Last week we made butterfly glyphs. A glyph is a picture that follows a key and tells people about the person who made it. After everyone is done, we see what we can tell about the group. (Like, there are nine boys in our class)

Here is our key.

Right now we are studying living things and we planted marigold seeds last Monday. Today when we got here we all had at least one sprout!

Here is one of our plants up close.

Virus

Hello all!

Well we made it back from spring break and got a nasty surprise. The school system's computer system has a virus. I won't be posting much until it is fixed as I do all of it here at my desk. They are working away on it and I know it will be all better before long.

Hope you all enjoyed your break and are now excited about the warm weather! We are enjoying playing outside (when it isn't raining), making spring crafts, and getting ready for first grade.

Check back for updates in a few days when they get this thing fixed.

Thanks!
Mrs. Lee

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Today we celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday along with classrooms all over the country. We started the day by listening to Green Eggs and Ham on the radio. Next, the fun began! We went to several kindergarten classrooms and read Dr. Seuss stories. First we were in our classroom with Mrs. Lockett's class. We read The Cat in the Hat and made up lots of rhyming words. Next we went to Mrs. Scott's class and she and Ms. Lowery read Fox in Socks and we had a sock race! Finally we went to Mrs. Griffin's class and read Bartholomew and the Oobleck and got to make our very own oobleck!

We wore green today in honor of Green Eggs and Ham.

Listening to Mrs. Lockett read The Cat in the Hat.

Mrs. Lowery reading Fox in Socks.

Busy Day!

Today is scarf day. We are "Wrapped Up in Good Writing" today!

We got the torch today! Every day Ms. Davis picks a class to have the torch that she saw having good behavior in the hall the day before.

Christa was the line leader and got to carry the torch first.

We had a special assembly today. One of the Harlem Globetrotters came! Hollywood talked to us about being honest and respectful. We really liked seeing his tricks. Jose and Madison got to help him with some stunts.

Here is our class with Hollywood.

Let's Get Measuring!

This week since we are in the middle of testing we are jazzing up our days by not doing much pencil and paper work. We are going to formally start measurement next week and did a bit of exploring this week. Here we are on Wednesday at math stations. We had different items to measure and measure with.

Tornado Drill and More Dental Health

First thing this morning we had a tornado drill. This week is Severe Weather Week so we talked about what severe weather is and why we need to know what to do when it comes our way.

We read the tale of Curious George Goes to the Dentist today. We talked about what happens when you go to the dentist and what to expect. No one in our class is scared!

Let the testing begin!

We will begin the Metropolitan Readiness Test on Wednesday. We will test Thursday and Friday also. Make sure you are on time to school, sleep good the night before, and eat a good breakfast.

Phone Book Drive

We are having our annual phone book drive. The class that brings the most wins a popcicle party! Please ask your neighbors for their out-of-date books and send them to Room 111! Thanks!
